Samantha Haslam Pilates

Pilates is a focused form of exercise that helps to strengthen and lengthen the muscles, bringing body awareness and helping to develop a toned physique. Pilates is based on the idea that bad habits or injuries lead to imbalance and weakness in the body. Controlled repetitive movements are used to realign the skeleton and re-educate the body. Breathing techniques, stretching and graceful movements are used to improve body awareness.

Joseph Pilates was the founder of Pilates, early in the 20th century. He developed an interest in fitness due to a sickly childhood. He studied many forms of exercise, including yoga, gymnastics and body building to try and improve his health. Eventually he used his knowledge and understanding to create his own method, which he said could rehabilitate an injured body and strengthen a healthy one.

Pilates can be practised by anyone at any age. The exercises can be adapted to everyone according to strength and flexibility.
